This is not your normal mask that you see every day. Modeling masks are a powder type mask,  and they turn into a ‘gelatinous’ substance when mixed with water. Once the water is mixed, you apply the newly formed gelatinous mask to your face. When the gelatinous substance touches your face it will start to become solid, forming a smooth mask.

Note: If you put an essence/ ampule on your face first, then apply the mask, the mask will  enhance penetration into the skin.  ( The mask will start to turn into a solid, pushing the essence/ ampule into the skin.)

The Formulation

The ‘Irritants’/ Comedogenic

• Algin: This ingredient is known as a type of algae, and was heavily flagged by COSDNA skin care database as a strong irritant. Some forms of algae (blue/ green types of algae) can be irritants to the skin. However Algin is a type of brown algae, and it is known for its numerous benefits in skin care. Algin can act as a thickening agent, which makes the product more easily spreadable on the face. In addition, brown algae can help keep your skin moisturised, since it has water binding properties.
• Fragrance

• Glucose: This ingredient is a major energy source for plants and humans. However, when Glucose is applied topically onto the skin, Glucose has moisture binding properties, and this prevents water loss.
• Portulaca Oleracea Extract: An amazing ingredient that is under appreciated in skin care products. Portulaca Oleracea Extract has been linked to anti – inflammatory/ fungal, and microbial properties. Additionally, it also contains fatty acids, vitamins (A,B,C), Niacinamide, and Flavonoids (this gives the plant it’s anti-oxidants). Numerous studies have shown how Portulaca Oleracea Extract can be beneficial to the skin, by being a strong anti-oxidant, reducing the amount of free radicals in the body, whitening the skin, and increasing collagen activity. A truly amazing ingredient! (Source A & B).
• Glycyrrhiza Glabra (Liquorice) root extract: A superstar ingredient that has anti – inflammatory and anti – bacterial properties. Glycyrrhiza Glabra (liquorice) also stimulates melanin production (which is essential in treating hyper-pigmentation), and therefore has been linked to skin-lightening  products. Additionally, Glycyrrhiza Glabra (liquorice)  also consists of ‘ Flavonoid‘ (this is  the plant’s nutrients that make up the plant). Due to this, liquorice extract is filled with numerous amounts of antioxidants, and is perfect for keeping the skin healthy. I pulled this information from a closed journal, meaning  the journal is not open to the public, but i have summarised the important bits about Glycyrrhiza Glabra ( Source C & D).
• Sodium Hyaluronate: If you ever see this ingredient in a product, its just a fancy way of saying hyaluronic acid. This ingredient can hold up to 1000x times of its moisture content, and sadly can only work topically to keep the skin hydrated (this only applies if sodium hyaluronate is not in a serum). This ingredient works best as a serum, so it can penetrate deep within your skin!  Always keep this in mind.

Product Review

Scent (4/5): The scent of this product in its powder form gives off a earthy smell. However in its solid form, there is no obvious/strong smell to the mask.

Texture of the product(4/5):   In its solid form the texture of the mask is cold and smooth.

Application(4/5):  The application of this mask onto your face can be really time consuming (you want to put a THICK layer on your face, a thin layer won’t suffice for this type of mask.) Additionally, mixing the mask from a powder substance into a gelatinous substance can be tricky, and very time consuming. You want to add 2: 5 ratio of water to powder for a thick gelatinous substance to form. Once mixed, you apply a THICK layer all over your face and wait for it to turn solid. Keep in mind that you really have to rush yourself during this step, as the gelatinous substance will start to turn into a solid in your cup/ mixing container.

Quality of product (4/5): I absolutely adore this type of face mask. I would never in my life expect a face mask to feel so nice and refreshing. This type of face mask is cold to the touch, and is perfect to calm down acne and the temperate of your face (if your in hot weather/ if your face in general seems to be hot). The ingredients in this mask are fantastic (anti – inflammatory/ moisturising), and really helped in keeping my skin refreshed.  Additionally, when you are finished with this mask all you have to do is peel it off. If you applied a THICK layer like I suggested, this process is a breeze. However, the only problem I have with this mask is how time consuming the process is. Spending 10 minutes mixing and applying this mask every time I want to use it honestly turns me off using the product. Saying that, this is defiantly my go to mask when I feel my face heating/ warming up in the Australian warm climate.

Overall Performance/ Effects:

• Soothed my skin (especially if you applied an essence underneath the mask)
• Reduced the size of my acne, but did not treat it (read the last dot point)
• Reduced the temperate of my face
• The mask felt cold upon application
• Made my skin feel refreshed
• Provided some moisture to my skin
• The mask in its powder form has a strong earth smell, but this smell is non existent when it forms into a solid
• Keep in mind that the ingredients in this mask are mostly moisturising, and anti- inflammatory. If you have on going acne, I suggest using a more stronger acne ingredient that kills the bacteria/dirt clogging up your pores. This mask just reduces the inflammation, but does not treat acne problems (since it does not kill the bacteria causing the acne).
