Wavelengths

Our sunscreens works by protecting the skin from UVA & UVB wave lengths (admitted from the sun). Each ingredient (physical or chemical), works best by protecting us from these wavelengths, but they may not offer us full protection. It is important to know what kind of protection your sunscreen is giving you.

  • UVB wavelengths: 290 – 320nm
  • UVA wavelengths: 340 – 400nm. In particular: long UVA wavelengths are called UVA1 (340 – 400), and short UVA wavelengths are called UVA2 (320 – 340)

Physical sunscreens

  1. Zinc Oxide: Protects against 290 – 400nm (Full UVA + UVB spectrum)
  2.  Titanium Dioxide: Protects against 290 – 350nm (Full UVB)

Chemical Sunscreen

  1. Avobenzone: Protects agaisnt 310-400nm (Full UVA)
  2. Homosalate: Protects agaisnt 295 – 315nm (UVB)
  3. Octinoxate: Protects against 280 – 320nm (UVB)
  4. Octisalate: Protects against  295 – 315nm (UVB)
  5. Octocrylene: Protects against  290 – 350nm (UVB +  UVA2)
  6. Oxybenzone: Protects against 290 – 360nm (UVB + UVA2)
