Review (Mizon): Intensive Skin Barrier Emulsion

With University starting in about 2 weeks for me, i want to dedicate this time to my blog & writing more reviews. However this review will be difficult to write for a couple of reasons:

1.  This product to my knowledge is still recent
2. This product has no reviews online to compare results
3. This product ingredient’s list is all in a foreign language

I first heard of the Intensive Skin Barrier line 8 months ago during winter while browsing RoseRoseShop. Intrigued by this new brand & the variety that was offered, i decided to order my first ever emulsion. I normally don’t include emulsions in my skincare routine and this varies with a number of reasons, one being my skin type. Generally with oily skin you want to limit the amount of cream moisturisers. However, i heard this was a light weight emulsion which i  leaned towards due to my oily skin.

The Item:

Mizon Intensive Skin Barrier Emulsion (150ml)

This is a light weight emulsion that acts as a moisturiser. It contains hyaluronic acid which is able to treat dry skin conditions by being absorbed into the skin, and creating a moisture barrier topically.

This product claims too:

• Add moisture to the skin from it’s layering system: This product is supposed to hydrate the skin from within, but also on the surface.
• Treat dry skin: This product contains hyaluronic acid which delivers moisture to the skin. While having Ceramide to block moisture evaporation.
• Have a formula for sensitive skin individuals: The formula is supposed to be mild, & helps in treating the skin by protecting it from harmful substances.

From these claims i would expect this emulsion to be best suited for: oily/dry/sensitive skin.

The Formulation:

A full ingredients list can be found at Peach & Lily’s Website. Sadly all the ingredients listed aren’t separated from each other, and this makes running an analysis harder. This is mostly due to me not knowing when the ingredient’s starts and where it ends in the list. Having a interest in skincare products, and for future readers,  i tried with the best of my abilities to split up each product. HOWEVER, please take this ingredient list with a pinch of salt. Most of it looks correct to me as i am able to run it through COSDNA while seeing a majority of results appear. But as my tag line says, i have a mediocre love of skincare. I am no way trained in anaylsing ingredients. Everything mention or written is what i have gathered from my readings.

Note: some ingredients appear twice in the list. This is my mistake of not being able to find out when an ingredient starts or end. Please if you are going to reference this list, to take it with a pinch of salt. This list is mainly used for me to figure out the main ingredients, rather as a step by step list of ingredients.

The ‘Irritant(s)‘

• Cetearyl Alcohol: Is a fatty alcohol known for its various uses, such as an emulsifier, thickener & emollient. This ingredient is suppose to condition the hair/skin, allowing it to soften the skin with additional uses. Furthermore this will give the product the ability to spread on the skin’s surface, while keeping the product from separating apart.  Normally this is a safe ingredient according to Paula’s Choice & various online data bases. However, studies have shown this ingredient to be an irritant to sensitive skin. COSDNA rates this ingredient to be a 2 for Acne & Irritating the skin.
• Alcohol: A debatable ingredient. This depends on your personal preference & experience. If alcohol dries out your skin/ makes you break out, it’s a good idea to stay away. However it is quite far down the list.

The ‘Star(s)‘

• Hyaluronic acid: A very well known ingredient in skin care. A generic search of this ingredient can tell anyone the function of this. It is able to hold 1000x the volume of water and is a must in keeping skin hydrated. This ingredient reinforced the idea of the ‘Intensive Skin Barrier’ line, since it helps create a moisture barrier topically on the skin. Normally works best in serum form to undergo the skin’s surface. Since the ingredient is far down the ingredients list, effects from this ingredient is limited.
• Ceramide:  Another ingredient that reinforces the Skin Barrier line idea. Normally found naturally on top of the skin, it helps in holding our skin together. In skincare products it is able to restore the skin’s moisture & our natural barriers.  This ingredient is also far down the list.

 

The Experience

This was my first ever emulsion  that i used to treat my oily & sensitive skin. Sadly i did not love this product. If anything this product questions my ability to try out the rest of the skin barrier line. When applied to the skin this light weight formula absorbs within seconds (the consistency is almost the same as the Mizon All in one Snail Repair cream). The next morning i awoke with breakouts ranging from cystic acne to tiny white heads. Being a skeptic when it comes to my skincare i always like to give products that i buy a chance. The following day i applied the emulsion again and went to bed. Needless to say i woke up with more white heads. However, i did not let this effect my thoughts on this product. By the third day i have stopped using the product and started using it as a neck cream ( I did pay for it, so it would be a shame to waste it). On day four i awoke with bumps on my neck. For a light weight cream i just couldn’t believe what i was seeing. By the end of the week i had stopped using this emulsion completely. You would think the review ends here, but as i said i am a skincare skeptic. I really wanted to believe in this product, and 3 weeks latter i returned to using it. The following is history because it broke me out again.

Just because this didn’t work for my skin type, doesn’t mean it wont work for yours. This is just my experience with this product. A brief note was made about how this emulsion worked for a reddit user, so not all hope is loss.

Verdict: Not my cup of tea.

Repurchase: Never.

Recommendation:

• Oily skin types: lightweight formula suitable for oily skin types.
• Dy skin: Hyaluronic acid & Cermaide ingredients added for dry skin types.

Not Recommended for:

• Sensitive skin types
